About Kensington turnout rugs
Kensington is a family owned, well-established U.S. market leader in horse clothing. They utilise quality materials and manufacturing for a long-lasting product, as well as designs that ensure comfort for the horse. Their turnouts are one of the most popular in the US market, which has much higher quality standards than we've become used to in the UK.
What makes them special
- Surefit cut: Kensington's Surefit rug cut is designed to fit a wide range of horse shapes, and to minimise rubbing problems. The cut incorporates detachable criss-cross belly straps and leg straps and an adjustable front with snaps for easy on and off.
- 1200 denier nylon shell: Originally developed for flak jackets, this is one of the strongest materials available for horse rugs,
- Teflon coating and Cool-Plus liner: The turnout ranges incorporate Teflon coating to provide fade and stain resistance, plus a Cool-Plus liner designed to draw away heat and wick away moisture when needed, preventing damp chill and allowing the rug to remain comfortable at higher temperatures.
- Light hollow-fill insulation: Kensington's insulated rugs employ special super-effective hollow-fill insulation that combines high breathability with a lot more warmth per gram of weight, providing a lighter and easier-to-handle rug
- Robust construction: Kensington's great designs are complemented by top-level manufacturing specifications: highly robust materials, double-seaming using very strong thread, wide velcro attachments, and solid, no-rust metal fittings
- Lifetime replacement Guarantee: Such is Kensington's confidence in the robustness and longevity of their products that they offer a Lifetime Replacement Guarantee. More details here
The range
Kensington's turnouts come in lighter, medium and heavy-weight versions, with a matching neck warmer.
Their turnouts are complemented by their superb Protective Fly Sheet: this has the same Surefit cut and quality construction, and is also made of super-robust materials: Textiline mesh that absorbs over 70% of UV as well as protecting against biting insects. Many use these sheets in winter over a turnout - it protects the turnout from damage and the worst of mud, and provides some extra warmth. These rugs were also found to provide good body protection to a group of horses caught up in a barn fire. Hence the term "protective sheet" - these are much more than a fly sheet!
